Memories of Herb

I first met Herb in 1962. I was playing tuba in high school band. The next thing I knew Herb had me in the town band. Either he or Ed Clark was band master. Every time we had a function Herb always picked me up. I continued to play in band with Herb until 1963. During this period he taught me much about music. I then departed home for a career in the Air Force. Upon my return in 1987, I again came in contact with Herb by playing in the town band now under John Hood. I wanted a new instrument, talked with Herb and he suggested baritone. After much instruction fm Herb I was able to play this instrument in the band. In the meantime I began to ask Herb some of his secrets on the piano. I wanted to play gospel music with a little swing. Herd then taught me all about chords and after a few months practice I was able to change my whole style of playing - I will forever be in Herbs debt for this. I cannot begin to imagine how many of his students he must have helped in the same manner, enabling them to have a love of music. I only wish I could have been in his class for a year or so - he loved music and was so talented. I played music with Herb for close to 15 years. Many a time I visited him for music and instruction. A visit with Herb was better than a tour of any museum. Henry, my sincere sympathy and thoughts are with you and the family. I deeply regret that I will not be able to attend Herbs homecoming as I am out of town and cannot return until Thurs.
