Ruth Marilyn Pink (Goodman) died peacefully in her 99th year on Thanksgiving (Oct. 13, 2014) which coincided with the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. So many of us have reason to give thanks, especially her four sons - Steven (Gloria), Joel (Rita), Ronald (Joan) and Darrel (Elizabeth) - and their families. She watched and cheered them as they built successful businesses and law careers, married and raised their families. Over the last decades she took pleasure from the expanding triumphs of her two dozen + grand and great grandchildren. Ruth was a true artist. Her flower gardens were a “must see” for tourists to Yarmouth. She was a potter who delighted in throwing clay and glazing so that she could donate the proceeds of sales to charity. Each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren has a piece of needlework created for them as a present on her birthday. The draw for Nanny's handwork became the central feature on her last ten birthdays when she relished being surrounded by family and giving rather than receiving. Ruth led many organizations in Yarmouth and beyond. The YMCA, for which she raised thousands and thousands of dollars and the Yarmouth Hospital, especially its Ladies' Auxiliary were her favorites. She was a fixture at the Hospital Gift Shop, as if it was her own shop. With her husband Irving, who died in 2004, she lead major capital campaigns to ensure that Western Nova Scotia would have as high quality medical care as anywhere else. She was Yarmouth’s Citizen of the year in 1976. Our mother also contributed extensively to her Jewish community and to Israel. She served for many years as a National Vice President of Hadassah WIZO Canada. Mom oversaw a busy home where her domestic skills ensured that the freezer was always full; there were always home-baked goods on the counter; she pickled and preserved the bounty of her wonderful vegetable garden; and there was always an extra place at the table for whomever might arrive. For over 65 years Mom supported her late husband Irving who carried on the preeminent law practice in western Nova Scotia. But more than being a cheerleader Mom and Nanny was her own woman who excelled in all that she did. In addition to her children and their families she is survived by her younger sister Annetta Chernin. Her other sisters, Rose and Edith , and her parents Jeanette and Solomon Goodman died ‎many years ago. We thank Renate Muise and Sue Purdy and her team for the loving care given to Mom as she aged so gracefully, with humor, independence, quick wit and dignity: the hallmarks of the life she lived so well. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. A funeral will be held Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 11 a.m from Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, Jewish National Fund or a charity of your choice.
