Phyllis Joyce Amiro
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, age 97 on April 16 at the Dartmouth General Hospital with her two daughters by her side.
Born in Yarmouth on November 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Ella Harding.
She is lovingly survived by her three children, Donna (Halifax), Louis and Beverley (Dartmouth), step granddaughter Sandra Hayward (Dartmouth) and brother Milford Harding(Guelph, Ontario). Also many nieces, nephews and her very special Barrington Passage family.
She was predeceased by our loving father, her devoted husband of 60 years, Benjamin Amiro, sister Eloise Goodwin, brothers Lendall and Douglas Harding, and special son-in-law Gregory Hayward.
Mum, dad and Louis lived in Yarmouth most of their lives. They moved to Dartmouth in 2000 to the delight of their two daughters. It wasn’t long before it felt like home for them.
Mum’s first love was her family. She devoted all her time to her husband and children. Mum was always there for us from the minute we got up in the morning until we went to bed at night. After Louis was diagnosed with MS in early adulthood, mum unselfishly cared for him until she was no longer able. She supported dad in every aspect of their married life. We were blessed to have had an amazing Christian home filled with love and respect.
Once we were all grown and on our own, mum became quite the quilter. She produced a spectacular bluenose quilt from a pattern dad enlarged for her, in addition to a dozen or more beautiful ones. She loved to cook, garden, and sew. There wasn’t anything mum would not do to help maintain the house and care for her children. Mum was a fighter when it came to her health. She had many setbacks over the years but continued to work diligently to get back on her feet. Unfortunately, her health started to decline after she fell in late December. Although she managed to improve, it took a toll on her. Recently she was hospitalized with pneumonia and it was more than her little body could take. Mum’s prayers to finally be with dad were answered as she slipped away peacefully.
We feel very blessed to have had such an amazing mother in our lives for so many years. Mum’s beautiful smile, gentle, kind and loving ways will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends. We will cherish our memories as we make our way through the coming days and start to heal our broken hearts.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Graveside prayers will take place at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, with Donna and Beverley on Monday, April 20 at 1:00pm. There will be a Facebook live video of the service on Sweeny’s Funeral Home Facebook page if you wish to join. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice with the family’s thanks.

Dearest Bev, Donna and Louis, just found out of the passing of your beautiful mother... as I read you loving tribute to her, memories of a time long ago in Yarmouth came flooding back..! how fun it was to visit your welcoming home in Yarmouth and tell and listen to the stories of the day... Bev ,you and I had the best boss in the world when we worked at the Dairy Queen, (your Mom), even though she kept an eye out for us when we tried to get a little extra ice cream or fries when it was our lunch . I will never forget her beautiful smile and the sparkle in her eyes as she talked about you guys and of course her beloved Ben... Having lost my Mother 2 1/2 years ago , I know the heartache you feel... it is a long and lonely journey for sure , but it is paved with happy memories and I hope that will ease your pain... with love and sympathy to you all , Deborah ( Ettinger) Gauthier

To Bev, Donna and Louis.... it was a pleasure in the last 15 or so years to get to know your Mum and Dad. She was always so welcoming, and was always so interested in our lives, the things we were doing, the family. My condolences to you all. It was neat to be able to 'be' at the graveside service - thanks to Sweeny's. The reference to a ship leavng and being greeted at its destination is a hopeful one which illustrates Phyllis' firm belief in eternal life and the joys beyond this life. Peace and Blessings, Catherine+

Dear Cousins,
My sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom, my Aunt Phyllis. Aunt Phyllis was a true lady in every sense of the word and I was so warmly received when I visited. When they lived in Yarmouth I would occasionally have dinner with Uncle Ben, Aunt Phyllis and Louis. It was always a pleasant time with lots of interesting conversation. There were always homemade sweets and coffe offered if I dropped in for a short visit. I know that your hearts are heavy with sorrow but she is no longer suffering. I will be thinking of all of you tomorrow.
