Obituary for Phyllis Joyce Amiro

Phyllis Joyce Amiro
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, age 97 on April 16 at the Dartmouth General Hospital with her two daughters by her side.
Born in Yarmouth on November 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Ella Harding.
She is lovingly survived by her three children, Donna (Halifax), Louis and Beverley (Dartmouth), step granddaughter Sandra Hayward (Dartmouth) and brother Milford Harding(Guelph, Ontario). Also many nieces, nephews and her very special Barrington Passage family.
She was predeceased by our loving father, her devoted husband of 60 years, Benjamin Amiro, sister Eloise Goodwin, brothers Lendall and Douglas Harding, and special son-in-law Gregory Hayward.
Mum, dad and Louis lived in Yarmouth most of their lives. They moved to Dartmouth in 2000 to the delight of their two daughters. It wasn’t long before it felt like home for them.
Mum’s first love was her family. She devoted all her time to her husband and children. Mum was always there for us from the minute we got up in the morning until we went to bed at night. After Louis was diagnosed with MS in early adulthood, mum unselfishly cared for him until she was no longer able. She supported dad in every aspect of their married life. We were blessed to have had an amazing Christian home filled with love and respect.
Once we were all grown and on our own, mum became quite the quilter. She produced a spectacular bluenose quilt from a pattern dad enlarged for her, in addition to a dozen or more beautiful ones. She loved to cook, garden, and sew. There wasn’t anything mum would not do to help maintain the house and care for her children. Mum was a fighter when it came to her health. She had many setbacks over the years but continued to work diligently to get back on her feet. Unfortunately, her health started to decline after she fell in late December. Although she managed to improve, it took a toll on her. Recently she was hospitalized with pneumonia and it was more than her little body could take. Mum’s prayers to finally be with dad were answered as she slipped away peacefully.
We feel very blessed to have had such an amazing mother in our lives for so many years. Mum’s beautiful smile, gentle, kind and loving ways will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends. We will cherish our memories as we make our way through the coming days and start to heal our broken hearts.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Graveside prayers will take place at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, with Donna and Beverley on Monday, April 20 at 1:00pm. There will be a Facebook live video of the service on Sweeny’s Funeral Home Facebook page if you wish to join. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice with the family’s thanks.
