Obituary for Mark William Stevens

Mark William Stevens
STEVENS, Mark William – 66, of Yarmouth, passed away December 14, 2013. Born in the Annapolis Valley on November.14, 1947 he was the son of Hazel and Alex Stevens.
In the arms of his wife of 23 years, Mark left this place to be with his Lord and Saviour; he was surrounded by the people he loved the most – his daughters and grandchildren. Our hearts are broken! He is survived by his wife, Eileen (Muise), 3 daughters Denise Vacon (Beth), Tammy Vacon, Michelle Thomas (Danny), 2 Grandbabies, Camryn and Elliott as well as his extended family, the d’Eon’s. He is survived by his Dad, Alex Stevens; brothers: Merton (Louise), Milford (Joyce), and Merlin (Sheila), sisters: Mary (Glen Currie), all from the Valley and Mary Jo Atwell (Mitchell) Calgary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Mom, Hazel, and a baby brother, Malcolm. Mark was a remarkable man; family and community minded to the end. His first love was for his family and we all recognise his devotion to us. He was part owner of Sweeny’s Funeral home in Yarmouth until 2007. He was a board member of NS Board of Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors (2000-2011); he was on the Program Advisory Committee for the NSCC Funeral & Allied Health Services Program for many years. Mark was involved with Yarmouth Special Olympics as well as Provincial Special Olympics – Tammy was his buddy in all he did! He was a member of the Police Advisory Committee (Yarmouth) and a past member of the Yarmouth Rotary Club serving as program chairperson. He devoted much time to the Maple Grove Memorial Club. His commitment to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 and to the veterans living at the Veterans’ Unit in Yarmouth is to be commended. He served as: President, Sergeant at Arms, Zone Commander, Welfare Officer, Chaplin, Poppy campaign manager, Children’s Wish Foundation. Mark volunteered many hours of his time helping those in need. He was responsible for bringing to Yarmouth the Portraits of Honour; he gave many hours to the planning and the placement of the Maple Grove Afghanistan War Memorial. He spent a great deal of time with the veterans and helped the Veteran’s Unit purchase much needed equipment. He was honored with the MSN & the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medals, amongest many. Throughout the years he received many plaques of recognition from various organisations. We are so proud to have had him in our lives but for a short time. We will hold him close to our hearts always. He was a devoted friend and loved golfing with many of them. He was a member of the Wesleyan Church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. His life will be celebrated with visitations from 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday December 18, 2013 at the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church with a Legion service beginning at 8 p.m. His home coming service will be held Thursday December 19, 2013 at 3 p.m. at the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church with Pastor John Symonds officiating. A reception at the church will follow the service. Burial will be at a later date in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery.
