Obituary for Kenneth Thomas Langille

Kenneth Thomas Langille
LANGILLE, Kenneth Thomas - Age 63, of Yarmouth, N.S. suddenly passed away in paradise on March 28, 2016 while on vacation with friends in Jamaica. Born March 8, 1953, he was the son of Natalie Burlock and the late Ernest G. Langille. Ken was larger than life to all who knew him and was a pillar of his community. Growing up in Lake George, Yarmouth County, Ken graduated from YCMHS at the age of 16 where he was President of Student Council. He went on to pursue a career in education at Saint Mary’s University and completed his undergraduate degree in Maritime / Canadian History in 1975. After graduating from Dalhousie University in 1977 with his Bachelor of Education, Ken returned to Yarmouth where he taught Law, History and many other subjects at YCMHS. His innovative approach to teaching inspired both students and faculty. Unsatisfied with the Law curriculum he developed his own, a course he continued to teach until retiring in 2011. Ken’s work was his life and he worked just as hard in retirement as he did in his 34-year career teaching at YCMHS. He loved his role as "Teacher" at Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, and making a real difference in the lives of inmates, helping them to turn their lives around by advancing their education. Ken was an enthusiastic storyteller and loved sharing his knowledge of local folklore. His summer walking tours were always well-attended by locals and tourists alike. For over 20 years he was the community correspondent for Yarmouth on CBC’s Information Morning radio program and always had something positive to say about life in small town Nova Scotia. Ken enjoyed being heavily involved in Yarmouth politics and was proudly serving his community for a third term on town council. He sat on countless boards and committees and was passionate about volunteering his efforts anywhere he felt he could make a positive impact. He always had the best interests of Yarmouth at heart, a community he truly believed in and loved so much. Ken will be sadly missed by his family, friends, students, teaching colleagues and members of the community. He was a familiar face at the local farmer’s market and was always stopping to chat while out on one of his many long walks.Ken is survived by his children, Jordan Langille (Cailen Smith) of Cedar Lake and Jenna Langille of Boston, as well as by his mother Natalie of Yarmouth and brother Gary (Louise) of Halifax. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Ricki Langille of Bridgewater, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Donald, formerly of Bridgewater. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Funeral service to be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on May 7,2016 at 11 A.M. with Rev. Helen Chandler officiating. Interment to take place at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Yarmouth Historical Society or Communities in Bloom.
