Sailing

Back in the late 80s, while visiting in his early house on Lake Milo he introduced to me the Dufour Wing. A huge windsurfing board and sail. He taught me to sail it, but for many weeks, I would simply drift down to the Milo Boat club and he would drive down and sail the board back. From there we progressed to buying a real windsurf board and one wet suit. We were much poorer then. Sharing the board was easy.. sharing the wetsuit was.. well.. Im glad I finished work before him ... He always had a cold, and damp wetsuit. We sailed for many years. I will always remember his first time learning to jump waves at Pembroke beach.. He could jump okay.. but never thought ahead to the landing... Straight up in the air and when gravity dictated the inevitable, the sail hit the water first, followed closely by Russ making a cartoon outline of himself as he ripped through his new wave sail. He paddled everything back to shore without blinking an eye. He had boundless energy. Ill miss lugging him around Doctors lake on his wake board and sharing beer around his fire pit. Dave Crabbe
