Obituary

Mary Ruth (Stevens) Hamilton

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Ruth (Stevens) Hamilton, at 87 years of age, on May 2, 2020 at home with her loving daughter and son-in-law by her side. Born in Toronto, Ontario on November 9, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Eric Stevens and Margaretta Emily (Bagshaw) Stevens. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of almost 58 years, George William Hamilton; sister, Dorothy Hellebust; and great-granddaughter, MaCali Cormier. She is survived by daughters, Leah Ann Hamilton and Beth Lorraine (Roland) Hannem; Brothers, James (Karin) Stevens and John (Judy) Stevens; Grandma to Laura Fevens (Troy Sloan), Christina Fevens, Jocelyn LeBlanc (Sarah Kelly) and Allison LeBlanc and proud Great-Grandma to Nate, Hayden, Tessa and Matthew. The family would like to thank her friend, Ruth Freeman, with whom she shared a lot of laughs, drives and lunches.

Mary was an active member of the Pleasant Lake Baptist Church, where she played piano for over 50 years until recently when church gatherings were stopped due to Covid 19. She was very active in the Women's Missionary Society and loved her bible study group. Mary was a proud founding member of YACRO and also volunteered at the Teachers Center for many years. She was a schoolteacher by vocation and taught in locations in Ontario, Northern Quebec, North West Territories and Nova Scotia. She took great pride in her flower gardens and enjoyed spending every summer at the cottage with her husband where she would swim at least once every day. She loved dogs and in recent years, her poodle, Sophie, was her constant companion.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. A private Celebration of Mary's life will take place Friday, May 8, 2020, in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Moses Officiating. This service will be viewable via webcast on Sweeny's Funeral Home website. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Pubnico N.S. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made the Kaye Nickerson Centre or the Special Olympics (Yarmouth). Online condolences may be sent to: sweenysfh@eastlink.ca or you may sign the guest book and view our webcast on-line at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net

Sorry for your loss, but age 87 is a good long life. Paul Forsberg in Norfolk, MA (USA). Margery Forsberg passed away from the Coronavirus on April 23, 2020. We used to visit Nova Scotia (1997 through 2007) to see family. Had a big reunion in year 2000! Time will help you to heal.
