Obituary

It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Jamie Gordon McDonnell, 51, on December 4, 2019 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
Jamie was born on July 5, 1968 in Kamloops, BC. He moved to Yarmouth in 2001 and worked for many years for the Yarmouth Vanguard and later worked in the insurance industry. Jamie Mac was a masterful drummer who played with many bands both out west and in Yarmouth. He also mentored many new drummers as a drum teacher. Jamie loved drumming with every inch of his soul and he exuded pure joy on stage. To watch him play was a true privilege and his passing will leave a deep void among his fellow musicians. Jamie was a beloved presence in his community. Whether it was a quick greeting on the street or a long conversation about life and spirituality, you were better for having interacted with him - this was one of Jamie’s many gifts. Jamie was an active volunteer, a technology expert, and was famous for his homemade spaghetti sauce and pancakes. He loved to laugh and make other people laugh, his smile was contagious, and he had an unshakable faith that was absolutely awe-inspiring. The one thing that eclipsed Jamie's passion for drumming was his love for his wife and children. He was a devoted husband, best friend, and soulmate to Colleen - to witness their love for one another was truly humbling. He loved and supported his kids fiercely and was their loudest and most enthusiastic cheerleader. Jamie was so proud of his family. Jamie was predeceased by his parents, Terry and Elaine McDonnell, sister, Sandra McDonnell and brother, Greg McDonnell, all of whom he loved and missed dearly. Jamie leaves behind his wife and love of his life, Colleen Daley, children Elliot, Ayla, and Samantha McDonnell, all at home, sisters Trish McDonnell-Thellend (Rob) and Carole McDonnell-Popp (Brian), all of Kamloops, BC, parents-in-law John and Nancy Daley, South Ohio, brother-in-law Sean (Rose) Daley, St. Catherine's, ON, brother-in-law Mike (Jacqueline) Daley, South Ohio, nephew Trevor Balmer, nieces Amanda Balmer, Rachel and Brittany Daley, and Clara and Maeve Daley, great-nieces Sadie and Emily, and many good friends both in Yarmouth and Kamloops. Jamie touched the lives of many. We will miss him very, very much. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 11 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm with prayers at 7:00pm at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, December 12 at 2:00pm at St. Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth, Father Henry Smolenaars officiating.Donations may be made to Gilles Boudreau and Friends Cancer Help Fund. Family flowers only. Online condolences may be made to sweenysfh@eastlink.ca or you may sign the guestbook online at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net

Dear reader(s)

I had the pleasure and joy of growing up with Jamies' family (The McDonnell's), in Kamloops through the '70s,'80s, and '90s. From the various school pickups over the years in the light green '52 CHEV to the FORD LTD Station Wagon ( Elaine driving) with "Nuge" (the family dog), to and from our music jobs (gigs) in our early to mid-teens.. we developed super memories, lots of laughs and grew this incredible friendships along the way! ( not to mention the incredible energy and art of music that was derived from the songs that we played!! WOW!!)

Jamie and his older brother "Greg" were unsung heroes of drumming. I had the pleasure and good fortune of playing music with them for years in and around Kamloops + their sisters could sing like larks, ( and they could too)!

My connection to the McDonnell family, although very close and constant for over 20 years in Kamloops, grew less frequent after I moved from Kamloops in 2004. 'The McDonell family' connected with me from Grade 9, and continued as part of my growing up, playing music and many life experiences!

Although I know I wasn't the only one of my friends that thought this, Jamie's, and his family made you feel like you were part of their family. I would have to say that this family had true heartfelt music flowing through their veins/bones, right down from their Dad
(Terry), on trombone, and Mom ( Elaine) on Piano, to the awesome voices and singing from the sisters, and..... the multi-talented instrumentalists with Greg and Jamie. (Bass, guitar, percussion, and Drums... ah the Drums!!)

They rocked the socks off of every song he played!

Jamie put his heart into every beat and was a true musician. I will miss him and his talent deeply. Jamie carried a family tradition with him and in him. Predeceased by his Mom, then  Greg, then his Dad, then his sister Samantha, I guess God thought it was time that Jamie comes up to heaven and join them. (must be starting a band up there )

Who knows, maybe they're getting the Band Together up there right now with the 'Supreme CHoir of Angels'.  I can only imagine how good they sound together, drumming away in heaven, wow!! Rock on bros!!

My heartfelt prayers are with you Trish, and Carol, for peace and healing in this hard hard set back once again. You both carry the family torch to light the way!

God must have a magnificent plan to take your family ahead of you....  when I get there, tell them not to forget to invite me to the big 'family 'Reunion" ( I still remember how to play bass to all those songs we learned) ;)

To Jamie's wife and children, I send my deepest sympathy in the loss of Jamie's presence in your lives for now, but I am of the belief that you will see him again in his shinning splendor and talent showing you how beautiful it is up there in the splendors of above!

Stay strong little ones... hands-on heart and head tilted up towards heaven, look up with your eyes closed and you can see them all...

God Bless yo guys in Peace, conversion, and Healing, in Mind, Spirit, and Body...

Luv

your half -bro 'Hank ' [aka - Hugh!, aka -Henti]
