Obituary for Charles Randolph Gosling

Charles Randolph  Gosling
GOSLING, Charles Randolph -104, passed away on March 14, 2014 at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home in Halifax. Born in Flat Island (Port Elizabeth) NFLD, he was the son of the late Frederick and Eliza (Frampton) Gosling. He received his teachers licence at Memorial College in St. Johns and taught in Bona Vista Bay. He came to Halifax in 1929 and received his pilot’s licence in 1936. He worked at Moirs, the Waterfront as Gang Boss and on the Great Lakes as 2nd Engineer. In 1945 he moved to Lr. Argyle with his wife and two children where he worked as a lobster fisherman, the Fisherman’s Co-op, bought lobsters for UMF, and owned his own fish plant and long liner called – the Beothic. Charles was an over 50 year member of Keystone Chapter #5, Order of the Eastern Star Yarmouth, over 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge Hiram #11 Yarmouth, Halifax Shrine Club ( the Scottish Right, the York Rite and the Preceptory). He served for five years as member of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital Board, member of the Municipality of Argyle School Board, and served as Municipal Councillor of the District of Argyle from 1962-1974. He is survived by his daughter Mary (Robert Hickey); grandsons, Richard (Stacey) and Sean (Misty); great granddaughter, Autumn; great grandsons, Charlie and Patrick. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his loving wife Evelyn (VanAmburg); son, Richard; sisters, Mable and Amy; brothers, Roland and Richard. Charles will be dearly missed by his daughter Mary, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his many friends and staff at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home (special mention to the fourth floor staff) who were so wonderful to him during his time there. He especially loved to go to the many church services that Saint Vincent’s offered. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held Monday March 17, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A Masonic service will also be held during the evening visitation. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 1 p.m. from Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. A.D “Bill” Newell officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to the Saint Vincent Nursing Home Foundation.
