William Arthur McCarthy, age 88, passed away on June 9, 2018, at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born at home on May 31, 1930, in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, to George and Mabel Stetson McCarthy. William grew up in Truro, Nova Scotia. He graduated from Colchester County Academy in Truro in 1948. After high school he attended business school in Detroit, Mich. In 1952, William began work as an auditor for General Motors, where he worked for 39 years. He retired in 1991. William married Eva Christine Moode in 1961, in Toronto, Canada. They were happily married for 31 years. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing amateur hockey. He was also an avid billiard player who oftentimes cleared the table in a single turn. After retiring, he took up an interest in genealogy, and traced his ancestry to the 1400's. He was well-loved by his family for his selflessness, gentle nature and unexpectedly dry wit. William was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; and three siblings, Eleanor, George Alfred, and Allen Reginald. William is survived by daughter, Janice McCarthy Eiden of Charlottesville, Virginia; daughter, Brenda (Steve) Inman of Commerce, Michigan; son, Kevin (Kim) McCarthy of Novi, Michigan; sister, Dora Elizabeth of Ontario, Canada; his granddaughters, Sarah Eiden, Rachel Eiden, and Hannah Eiden; and grandson, Brandon McCarthy. The family will receive friends at Grace Community Church, in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at 11 a.m. A private family gathering will be held in Nova Scotia at a future date.
