William H. E. Day of Port Maitland, aged 84, died at his home on Saturday, January 29th,2022. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and after graduating from Harvard College with a degree in astronomy, he attended Indiana University where he was introduced to computer science. Between 1960 and 1970 he worked for IBM as a programmer when computers were in their infancy. He then studied at Washington University (St. Louis), where he received a Doctor of Science degree in applied mathematics and computer science. Bill taught at Memorial University in Newfoundland until his retirement in 1992, after which devoted himself to the study of local history (some of which appears on his website yarmouthhistory.ca) and the making and appreciation of beer. He is survived by his wife, Cecil, his brother Chet, his sons Geoffrey and John, and grandchildren Benjamin, Eleonore, Lucien and William Lucas Day.
