Obituary for Wentworth "Sonny" Murray Horton

Wentworth Murray “Sonny” Horton, 87, died peacefully with family at his side, at the Villa St. Joseph du Lac, Dayton, NS, on Sunday, October 13, 2019 . Born April 13, 1932, he was the son of the late Wentworth “Murray” and Florence (Miller) Horton. In his early working years, he ran his own dairy farm. Sonny briefly operated a construction company, and was employed as a heavy equipment operator and foreman for various Nova Scotian construction companies. Sonny ended his working career as Superintendent for the Department of Highways, Yarmouth County. Even after his retirement, he was a constant observer, and occasional critic, of the condition of roads and bridges in Yarmouth County. Sonny was a light aircraft pilot, flying since 1951 and was very proud of his vintage Fleet 80 Canuck, which he flew as far as Oshkosh, Wisconsin, with son Kevin. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Canadian Owners and Pilots Association and Stanley Sport Aviation. He was known to his family as a practical jokester, and regaled his grandchildren with tales of his exploits which occurred in his younger years. He faithfully drove Ford vehicles and his constant companions were various German Shepherds. Sonny built his own home, and could fix anything. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pauline; son Kevin (Theresa) Horton, Washington, USA; son Ronald Horton, Ontario; and daughter, Natalie Horton (Brian Lyons), Yarmouth County; grandchildren, Stephanie and Christopher Horton; Benjamin, Christian and Sarah Lyons. Also survived by sister Helen Gray of Deerfield. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant brother. Cremation has taken place under the care of Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Memorial donations in Sonny’s memory may be made to Parkinson Canada, or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home and and Crematorium, Yarmouth. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. from Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Pennell officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
