Whalen, Valerie

The world lost a fighter and heaven gained an angel with the passing of Valerie Lynn (McCoul) Whalen, 64, at home with her family on July 4, 2020.

Born in Brookfield, she was a daughter of the late Ervin and Gladys McCoul. Valerie moved with her family to Antigonish where she later started a family of her own. She and her husband followed their dreams to Northern Alberta as their family continued to grow and were embraced by a devoted church family.

Valerie's battle with health began with cancer in her early 30s and she struggled until her passing with a fierce determination to survive. Her doctors called her a miracle patient, as she fought with a stubbornness and determination like no other. Her strength of will was driven by her desire to spend every moment she could with her family.
Valerie's kind, compassionate heart and exceptional love for her family and friends means she will be dearly missed by those who loved her from across the country. Family was the center of her world and she had an amazing ability to treat all those close to her as cherished family. She was devoted to her children and fiercely protective of them. She was a quiet and private person and a good listener. She was drawn to those who had challenges of any sort, especially those young or old, who had personal struggles. She had a strong sense of faith and loved having scripture read to her. Her legacy of love lives on in the many lives she touched.

The deep loss is felt by her devoted husband, Ron; sons, Jody (Angela); Jeremy; Adam; daughters, Melissa (Andy) Brown; Amanda (John) Galbraith; adoring grandchildren, Aurora and Cayden; sisters, Rosalie (Michael) MacInnis; Karen (Reggie) Chisolm; brother, Gary (Marianne) McCoul; and many loving nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Ervie; sister-in-law Marie; brother-in-law Reggie, and nephew Michael.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 9th from 6-8pm and again from 1-2pm Friday from the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel, Yarmouth. Funeral Service will be Friday, July 10th at 2pm also from the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Rev Scott MacDonald officiating. Interment to take place at Darlings Lake Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we have limited seating in our chapel. Family and close friends will be given priority for seats. For those wishing to view the Funeral Service may also do so on our Website. Online condolences may be made to, or you may sign the guestbook online at

Many years ago Valerie and I were friends. I remember her as kind, funny, empathetic and witty. What I took away from reading her obituary is that these characteristics were what she lived until she passed. I am very sorry for your loss and hope that the cherished memories of her will sustain and comfort you all as you move through your grief. Sincere condolences.

I send my most profound condolences to all Valerie's Family on the on her passing. I have known the McCoul Family since I was 6 years old. They lived down the back field from my family. Karen & I have become great friends over the years. My most vivid memory of Valerie was when I used to go visit Karen at their home behind ours, Valerie used to read books to Karen & Me. The one I remember the most was The House That Jack Built. RIP Valerie.
