Obituary for Terry Alan Watkins

Dr. Terry Watkins opened his first practice - along with his father, Dr. Alan Watkins - Winnipeg in 1969 immediately after graduating from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC). During his years as a student at CMCC he served in various capacities including editor of the student newspaper, associate editor of the College Yearbook and secretary-treasurer of SAC. At graduation from CMCC he received the Student Service Award in recognition of his contributions to student activities.
In the early 1970's, Dr. Watkins served as Registrar of the Manitoba Chiropractic Association, then as President. During this time, he helped to establish guidelines for standards of practice which were adapted by the Canadian Chiropractic Association. In 1981, he was appointed as the first Chiropractic Insurance Consultant to the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation as the reviewer of injury claims under chiropractic care.
Dr. Watkins was also instrumental in the 1975 establishment of the Chiropractic Foundation for Spinal Research and served as foundation chairman until 1982 , then in later years as a consultant to the foundation's board.
In 1977, Dr. Watkins returned to CMCC for a two- year period in which he served as Co-ordinator of Chiropractic Studies, Associate Clinic Director, Director of Postgraduate Education, Chairman of the Academic Ranking and Salary Policies Committee and Academic Dean.
During his lengthy chiropractic career, Dr. Watkins served patients in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Burlington, Ontario, and more recently in Hebron, Nova Scotia, while also serving in other sports-related capacities such as sports injury advisor to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL), hockey coach (Air Canada Cup ,1991 Award of Merit), team doctor and training techniques advisor both to Track and Field groups and dance companies. In recognition of his work with various sports groups, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Canadian Chiropractic Sports College in 1981.
Dr. Watkins passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at the Villa St. Joseph Du Lac, in Hebron, Nova Scotia following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Maureen; children, Kit (Andy), Brad (Agnes), Colleen and Paul; grandchildren, Sebastian, Alex and Owen. A funeral service for Dr. Watkins will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at the Sweeny Funeral Home, 567 Main Street, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Following the service, a reception will be held in Jacob’s Loft Event Center above Sweeny’s Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to either the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia are deeply appreciated by the family.
