Sarah Marcella (Marcie) Matheson Rogers
It is with very deep sadness that the family of Sarah Marcella (Marcie) Matheson Rogers must inform you of her death at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Nova Scotia on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Marcie was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia on March 18, 1935 to Neil Hugh Matheson and Sarah Marcella (Johnston) Matheson. Marcie was the youngest of eleven siblings, having eight brothers: Earl Roy, Edgar Laughlin, William (Bill), Donald Weldon, James Archibald, Hugh Allan (Allie), Gerald Adrian, John Wallace and two sisters: Jessie Huett (Matheson) and Morah Woodrow (Matheson) all of whom have pre-deceased her. Upon graduating from high school in New Waterford, Marcie enrolled in the teaching program and graduated from the Normal College in Truro. Thereafter, she accepted a teaching position at the South End School in Yarmouth teaching grade 7. It was in Yarmouth, where she met her future husband Frank Leslie Rogers. She had a variety of interests throughout her lifetime ranging from genealogy, scuba diving, photography, ornithology, playing bridge, hunting for ancient artifacts and a great passion for music and the arts. The achievements in Marcie’s life of which she was most proud are her children and their partners, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are: Neil Leslie Rogers/Judy Alice Pearce and their children, Dr. Leslie Anne Rogers; Major Sarah Alicia Rogers/Alex Prymack; Glynis Catherine Rogers. Karen Manning Calvert/William Patrick Calvert. Karen's daughter Chelsea Manning Colonese/Jordan Shane Colonese and their children Maisie Kate Colonese and Bennett Shane Colonese. Allan Gilbert Rogers/Jacquelin Ann Hartigan and their children Daniel Frank Rogers and Graham Allan Rogers. All their love and attention strengthened Marcie’s final days. Special thanks to the physicians and nursing staff of 4 East and 4 South of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital for their compassionate care during Marcie’s illness. You family & parents have been so much a part of my life & my siblings with just wonderful holidays to Yarmouth with our parents Frances & Chuck Kennedy. Thank you for sharing those memories with us. So sorry to read of your Mom’s passing. Our families go way back and our parents spent many social gatherings together - your father was even dad’s best man. Besides exchanging Christmas cards until recently, I often ran into your mom in Yarmouth for the summers. She was always so happy and interested to catch up on things. A woman with such a variety of interests, I was always fascinated that she used to go search for arrowheads with Nate Bain. Again, my condolences to you all.

My condolences to Neil and all of Mrs. Rogers family. I have fond memories of your mother from Junior High and High School days, she always showed interest and kindness towards me and made me feel at home. May peace be with you Mrs. Rogers, and comfort your family in their time of need. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, may you be each others strength.

I met Marcie about 10 years ago when I moved to Chestnut Street 2 doors away from her. Such a good kind neighbour! I'll miss "her" cardinals, which she always fed, and be forever grateful for the pictures of my house she gave me. Plus, we both had a mad crush on the same famous actor, and giggled like schoolgirls over him.

My memory of Marcie was that there always seemed to be a smile lurking by her mouth even though sometimes her eyes were breathing fire, as if she knew mistakes were being made, while accepting the humans who were making the mistakes.
She was also one of a very few people who never reminded me that I was new to Yarmouth and that my ideas were irrelevant. People like Marcie and her friends and acquaintances did their part to ensure women's voices were heard.
