Obituary for Ruth Elizabeth Ring

It is with sadness and much love that the family of Ruth Elizabeth Ring (Duncanson) of South Ohio mourn her passing on April 6, 2022. Born in Yarmouth hospital on April 18, 1927, to Frederick Duncanson and Edna Duncanson (Hurlburt), she was a lifelong learner and passionate teacher. Ruth attended Normal College in Truro in 1946, beginning a 45-year career in the classroom. She first taught in Brazil Lake and then in North Kemptville, where she met the love of her life, Vernon. She continued to teach for many years at Carleton Consolidated School and in 1970 attended Nova Scotia Teachers’ College in Truro to upgrade her teacher’s license. Her desire to grow as an educator led her to travel to England to study and further upgrade her license during several summers in the 1970s. Ruth was later promoted to Vice Principal at Carleton Consolidated School and retired from teaching in 1991, having impacted many students’ lives along the way. Through the years, she also shared her love and her zest for life with her family. She always looked forward to the next family event or holiday adventure with Vernon and their four daughters and eventually with their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her retirement years, Ruth turned her nurturing spirit to her garden, spending countless hours of work and enjoyment from spring to fall. She faithfully served in her community churches, teaching AWANA, helping with youth groups, organizing Sunday School Christmas concerts, and most recently was a member of the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church. In later years, she continued to grow her faith through Bible Studies with her church community. Her consistent example has left a lasting heritage for her family. She will be remembered lovingly by her children: Carol (Bennett) Smith, Dartmouth; Verna (David) Pitman, Deerfield; and Doris (Arthur) Burrill, Lower Sackville; and by her 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Vernon; daughter, Barbara (Hubert) D’Eon; an infant grandson; sisters, Joyce (Roland) Hurlburt; Alma (Cecil) Hurlburt; brother, Keith Duncanson; and son-in-law, Bennett Smith. Visitation Sunday, 6pm-8pm, at Sweeny’s Funeral Home. Funeral service Monday at 2pm at Yarmouth Wesleyan Church, Reverend Robert Gates officiating. Interment in Hatfield Cemetery, Kemptville. Donations may be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation or Hatfield Memorial Cemetery.
