Obituary for Robert Gordie Rose

If you’re an early riser, we’re certain you’ve passed by the Old Dutch chip truck parked haphazardly at Tim’s for morning coffee or at any gas station, grocery or convenience store in town.
“Gordie” Robert Gordon Rose, 58, was a staple of Yarmouth and though he wore many hats throughout his life (trained meat cutter, K Foods, Chronicle Herald delivery, Irving, Sobeys, Vachon rep, Old Dutch rep), he is likely known to most as a professional joker. If Gord could make you laugh, his day was made.
Even with a diagnosis of Glioblastoma in 2021, nothing was going to stop him from aggravating & teasing everyone relentlessly and living his best life. His confidence never wavered, and he continued to compare himself to Jason Momoa and various professional wrestlers until the end.
Family meant a lot to Gord. Dinners at his mothers were rarely missed and anyone who showed up to eat was challenged with the CJLS morning question. When his favourite meal, “milk fish” was on the menu, he was on cloud 9. He was able to remain home surrounded by family & loved ones in his final days, guaranteeing his wishes to act the fool with us until the day he died were granted.
Cuba was his favourite place on earth. He tried to go yearly and fell in love with the beaches, culture, and the Cristal beer (so much so that he had a can of it tattooed on his arm). When he was on Canadian soil, he passed a lot of his time watching his favourite shows with a cat in his lap & some chocolate jujubes in hand. He enjoyed watching CNN and rolling his eyes at Trump, laughing at reruns of Monty Python & MASH(to name a few) and of course he followed the WWE religiously. We didn’t all love his choices in TV, but it was the only time he ever shut up, so we rarely complained.
A true music lover, he went to countless concerts in his day, many of them with his best friend Dave. He played guitar left-handed and often reminisced about “The Band” but when his rockstar days were over, he settled for the title of “connoisseur”, insisting on blasting classic rock in the car at top volume whenever dropping his daughter off at any public place.
He is survived by his mother, Marguerite “Marg” Rose (Dick); son, Stephen Pouliot (Danielle), daughter ,Shellisa Rose; brothers, Jim Rose (Marlene), Chris Rose (Judy); sister, Janice Mollins (Bob); grandchildren , Kyle, Haley, Arianna; and many nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.
During his illness, Gordie participated in brain cancer studies in hopes of helping others in the future. Even in his death he continued this legacy by donating his brain for research. (We know, he opened himself up to some jokes with this one, so go ahead, he’d want you to!)
In the words of one of his favourite comedians “he who laughs most, learns best” -John Cleese
And to quote another, “there’s a humorous side to every situation, the challenge is to find it” -George Carlin.
There will be a celebration to honor Gordie’s life from 1-3 p.m. Saturday ,May 20th,2023 at the Yarmouth Fire Hall, all are welcome. Online condolences may be made to www.sweenysfuneralhome.net
