Obituary for Rita "Lorraine" Vacon

Rita Lorraine Vacon

August 13, 1934 – October 8, 2022

“I thank The Lord for everything he’s done for me.”

With those final words of gratitude in her 89th year, Rita Lorraine Vacon breathed her last on Saturday, October 8th at the wonderful Roseway Manor in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.

Lorraine was born in Yarmouth Nova Scotia to Charles and Frances (Thériault) Trahan. In her early teens, Lorraine moved to Montreal, working at the Queen Mary Veterans’ Hospital while living with her mother in the city. Throughout her life, Lorraine would continue to enjoy caring for seniors. By the end of her teens, Lorraine was already married and had her first child, a daughter, Joanne. In the two subsequent years, she added sons, James and Jules. With the family living near the lake in Nominingue, QC, Lorraine first learned to drive a car. She was very pleased to have never had a car crash in her long driving career
.
After more than a decade in Quebec, Lorraine returned to Nova Scotia, living in Yarmouth and other communities of the Acadian Shore. Preferring new challenges, Lorraine moved often in the region, but after the birth of a fourth child, Charlene, Lorraine settled in downtown Yarmouth near the schools for her child.

In her spare time, Lorraine enjoyed making rugs, tackling puzzles and walking at a very brisk pace, especially for such a small frame. Whether she was at her happiest or experiencing the gloom of depression, Lorraine turned to song for expression and comfort. Her confidence took hold in song and Lorraine would sing anytime and anywhere she was moved to do so. She thrilled at playing the tambourine since her attempts to learn keyboards didn’t work out quite the way she’d hoped. When in a particularly high-spirited mood, Lorraine would even yodel! She never did touch alcohol, though, saying that it made her sick – and tasted terrible!

Lorraine was concerned when those she cared about struggled or did not have what they needed. She was generous and would do what she could to help others, though her own means were modest. In her own life, she was very proud of her work as a supervisor on the processing floor at Kennebec, one of the fish plants in Yarmouth.
In addition to her parents and step-mother Gertrude Surette, Lorraine was predeceased by her son Jules Dussault, her grandson Archie MacIsaac-Vacon, her sister and best friend Mary Verna Pothier, her first brother Wally Trahan, whom she mourned until the end, two beloved sisters, Barbra Crosby and Florence Dussault, and a cherished brother Gerald Surette.

Lorraine is survived by son James (Debbie) Dussault, two daughters, Joanne Dussault and Charlene (Rob MacIsaac) Vacon, grandchildren Gabriel (Carrie-Ann) Dussault, Nicholas (LeeAnn) Dussault, Giselle Dussault, Élyse (Olivier Lavoie) Charette-Dussault, Jeremy Dussault, Angus MacIsaac-Vacon, five great-grandchildren, so far, sisters Louise Boudreau and Joanne (Edmond) Smith, and brothers Clarence and Gary (Darlene) Surette.

Visitation will take place on Thursday October 13, 2-4pm, at Sweeney’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth with funeral services on Friday, October 14, 1pm at Sweeney’s followed by interment at Mountain Cemetery.

The family would like to express to the staff of Roseway Manor our deep gratitude for your caring and compassion over the last four years. Lorraine was at her most content in your charge, in no small part because you showed her loving respect. Thank you.
