Obituary for Maynard "Peter" Eldridge

Eldridge, Maynard Peter of Yarmouth, passed away on October 5, 2022, a few days before his 90th birthday with his wife by his side. While in the Yarmouth Hospital all his children and grandchildren were able to visit which he enjoyed so much. Born in Saint John, NB, Peter was the son of the late Maynard and Margaret (Dever) Eldridge. He was an honours graduate of St. Mary's University. After teaching junior high school in Halifax for four years, he taught English for many years and was vice principal at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School. In addition to serving as an advisor to numerous student activities while teaching, over the years he was very active in his local community working with many organizations including St. Ambrose Parish, the Yarmouth County Historical Society in which he served as President, Yarmouth Library Board, Nova Scotia Teachers' Union and the Retired Teachers' Organization, Heart & Stroke, Canadian Mental Health Association, Scouting, the Yarmouth Area Community Fund, and for many years a board member of the Pro-Life Movement, locally, provincially, and nationally. With his wife Mary, he was co-chair of fund-raising for the $2.4 million dollar expansion of the Yarmouth County Museum & Archives, and of the establishment of the Yarmouth Area Community Fund. He also enjoyed historical research and writing. In 1989 he was the recipient of the Provincial Volunteer Week Recognition award for Yarmouth, and with Mary, was honoured by the Yarmouth County Historical Society in 2001 for their work on the expansion. He always enjoyed meeting his former students and hearing about their accomplishments. He is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Mary (Lonergan) Eldridge; daughter Susan (Barry Fingerhut) and family, Dartmouth; son Brian (Jane Ann) and family, Ottawa; grandchildren Cameron, Dayna, Evan, and Liam; brother John (Lori) and family, British Columbia. He was pre-deceased by his infant son, Stephen Robert, and his sister Ann. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held at Sweeny's Funeral Home on Monday, October 10, from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9, with prayers at 7:30. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Co-Cathedral, Tuesday, October 11 at 11 am with Father Henry Smolenaars officiating. The service will be live-streamed by visiting www.stambroseyarmouth.ca. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Following the interment, a reception will be held in the Jubilee Room in the basement of St. Ambrose Church.
