PITMAN, Marion Ainslie – passed away peacefully at age 87, on August 31, 2020 in The Meadows Home for Special Care.
She was born April 12, 1933 to the late Wellesley and Ella (Sollows) Smith in Yarmouth.
She married the love of her life, Clyde R. Pitman, on June 20, 1957, and was close by his side for their 62 years of marriage. In their later years, they were able to live together in the same wing at The Meadows. The family wishes to thank the nurses and care workers at The Meadows, along with Drs. Julie Chandler and Natalie Horton, for going above and beyond in showing care, love, and compassion to both Marion and Clyde in their later years.
Marion and Clyde raised their three children, Roger (Betty Landry), Lynn (Wyman), and Dale, at their family home in Brooklyn. “Grammie” cared tenderly for her three grandchildren, Meaghan (Wangsgaard), Tom (Pitman), and Tyler (Wyman), and loved to hear her great-granddaughter, Bianca (Wangsgaard), sing. She was also survived by many nieces and nephews on both sides of her family.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Clyde; son-in-law John Wyman; brothers, Cecil, Tom and Jack: sisters Pearl and Juanita.
She was a gifted cook and prepared many delicious meals for her family, as evidenced by the “Pitman Paunch”. She had a sweet tooth and made sure that there was always a treat ready for dessert. She was an award-winning baker, winning prizes at exhibitions and other venues for her pickles, pies, and jams.
Marion had a green thumb and her home was bursting with plant life, both indoors and out. She was particularly proud of her beautiful rose bushes and her Giant African Violet collection. She shared this love with her children and grandchildren.
A devout Baptist, she was a member of the Brooklyn United Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Women’s Institute of N.S.
Family and friends spent many happy hours at the Pitman homestead, enjoying the view from the porch or the swing or gathered around the kitchen table, enjoying delicious food, games and each others’ company. Marion’s quiet strength, her love of family and community, and her talents in the kitchen will be sorely missed.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 3, 2020 from 1 to 2pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel, immediately followed by her funeral at 2pm with Rev. A.D. “Bill” Newell officiating. So sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I remember visiting your Mom and Dad early on in their marriage and always enjoyed those visits as a kid. Over the years I have followed the life and health of your parents and our sympathy is with you all at this time. May God Bless your family as you go through this time of loss.
