Obituary for Marilyn Josephine Burns

Marilyn J. (Forbes) Burns, age 87, died peacefully in her sleep on April 7 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born in Brooklyn, Yarmouth County, she was a daughter of William and Doris (Pitman) Forbes. The village of Brooklyn was a very important place for her. She was born there, she went to school there, she went to church there, she was married there, and she raised her family there. She was an active member of the Brooklyn United Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and held a number of positions. Marilyn went to Teacher’s College and was a proud member of the class of ‘55. She taught in various schools in the province but spent most of her teaching career at Arcadia Consolidated School. In 1961, she married Don Burns; they were married for 53 years. Marilyn and Don enjoyed playing bridge, traveling the world and taking Sunday drives in Yarmouth County (usually on dirt roads). Even though Marilyn visited many exoctic places, she found peace and tranquility close to home, including Port Maitland Beach, Ellenwood Park, and the deck in Kingsport. Marilyn volunteered for numerous organizations, including the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, the Brooklyn Women’s Institute, the CNIB, and the Canadian Cancer Society. After her retirement from teaching, Marilyn found a creative outlet in rug hooking and enjoyed weekly get-togethers with the Carpetbaggers as well as workshops and hook-ins. Marilyn was not a person for routine, except for two things: completion of the daily crossword puzzle in the paper and the nightly game of Jeopardy. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband Don, her brothers Allison Pitman and William Forbes, and her sister Carol Holland. She is survived by her daughters: Rebecca Forbes (Stephen Johnson), Dianne Burns (Michael Wile), and Elizabeth Richard (Larry), grandchildren William (Jen), Alexander (Amelia), Sylvie (Phoenix), and Jocelyn, and great-granddaughter Willow, sisters-in-law Laura Gilbert, Helen Burns, and Eloise Forbes, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 26,2022 from 12-2 p.m. in the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a Funeral Service at 2p.m. Rev. Doctor Shawn Kehoe and Rev. A.D Bill Newell officiating. Interment to take place in the Brooklyn Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr. Marais, Dr. Sood, Dr. Chahal, and the staff of 4 North for caring for her during her final days. Donations in her memory may be made to the Brooklyn Cemetery, the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Bible Society, or a charity of your choice.
