Obituary for Marie Hilda Hatfield

Our beloved, Marie Hatfield, born Hilda Marie Newell on November 24th, 1933, was the daughter of the late Lovitt and Verna (Smith) Newell of Rockville, NS. She departed this earthly life in her home on December 12, 2022, at the age of 89. She was a devoted wife, cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend to many. She was loved and adored by all who knew her.

Marie was an extremely hard worker, and spent her life farming, homemaking, and raising a family. She was a member of Pleasant Lake Baptist Church, which she attended faithfully. She also belonged to the Women's Auxiliary, and later the Friendly Neighbors, who would lunch together and plan fundraising to help others. For a time, she enjoyed bowling, and doing ceramic work with a group of friends.

At the Hatfield farm, Marie could be regularly found out in the fields with husband James, harvesting a variety of produce. She was often running back and forth from the house to greet customers of the farm's fruit and vegetable stand, in between household duties. When not in the fields, she was always busy inside the home cooking, cleaning, crafting, decorating, and taking care of a revolving door of children and grandchildren. Marie was mother to many; when you stopped in to visit at the farm, you were welcomed with open arms, and most often also fed an excellent meal. She was always happiest when surrounded by those she loved. Over the years, Marie hosted family members and friends for supper on special occasions such as Christmas' and birthdays. As the family grew, these events eventually resulted in her cooking meals and desserts for upwards of forty people in her modest kitchen. It was also commonplace for Marie to dedicate a night every week to having company over for supper. For several years, we looked forward to Saturday's good company, and delicious homemade baked beans and brown bread rolls. In addition to her talent for cooking, she was a fantastic baker; there was never a time when the kitchen counter didn't house some sort of sweet treats for the many visitors, both family and friends, who would frequent her home. At Christmas time, her children and grandchildren eagerly anticipated her peanut butter balls, fudge, and homemade chocolate turtles.
Marie was an excellent example for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as she was exceedingly kind and giving towards others. Anyone who has ever met her will undoubtedly remember her as an endearing woman, with a heart of gold. Words cannot convey how special she was to us, and what a significant void her departure will leave in our lives.

Marie is survived by her eight children: Etta (Lloyd) Belliveau of East Pubnico, Janice Stevens of South Ohio, Linda (Mario) Hatfield of Pleasant Lake, James (Julie) Hatfield of Tusket, Gordon (Mary) Hatfield of Tusket, Iris (John) Fletcher of Meteghan, Matthew (Audrey) Hatfield of Argyle, Mark (Paula) Hatfield of Argyle and like a son Doug Hatfield of Yarmouth. In addition to her children, she is survived by eighteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Linda (Leonard) LeBlanc, Becky (AI) Boudreau, Linda (Malcolm) Muise, Larry (Shirley) Stephens, and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband, James Hatfield, and brothers Edward and Malcolm Newell.
Thank you to Homecare and the VON for all the care they gave to our mother.
