Obituary for Hughie Joseph MacKinnon

Hughie Joseph MacKinnon of New Waterford, NS passed away on Thursday, July 14. 2022, at the age of 78. After a lengthy battle with cancer, Hughie died peacefully knowing his entire family loved him.

Hughie was born in New Waterford on June 13, 1944, and was the son of the late Roy and Elizabeth (Coombs) MacKinnon. The youngest and only son. he worked many odd jobs starting at an early age. He is remembered as an incredibly friendly, humorous man who was a friend to anybody he came across.

Grampy never missed a hockey game, favouring the Toronto Maple Leafs above others, and was also an avid watcher of the news. His penchant for knowledge was evident in his interest in history, always willing to excitedly discuss the wars of the past. Grampy loved Newfoundland music and played the harmonica. He was a very devoted husband and always took care of the needs of his wife as she lived.

Hughie is survived by his children Daniel (Sharon) MacKinnon, Tim (Carol) MacKinnon, Tamara (Kevin) Nickerson, and Leonard (Sam) MacKinnon. Grandfather to Tracy. Darrell, Ashley, Amber, Crisha, Destiny, and Lordan. Brother to Leta Mildrum, Theresa Bryden, Suzie Walsh. Utah Montgomery, and the many other dear family members, nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, friends, and acquaintances. Besides his parents, Hughie was preceded in death by his loving wife Sharon (Poole) MacKinnon.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. A graveside service will take place July 23, 2022, at 12 P.M. in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery with Rev. A.D. “Bill” Newell officiating. Donations in Hughie's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
