Obituary

CUNNINGHAM, Hubert Roy – age 83 of Yarmouth passed away peacefully at The Meadows Home for Special Care on January 1, 2020. Born in Central Chebogue, Yarmouth on May 14, 1936 he was a son of the late Hubert Stephen and Dorothy Catherine (Sweeney) Cunningham. Hubert enlisted in the air force after he had completed his high school education. During his 3 years serving with the air force he obtained electrical training that would follow him to his post air force career at Cosmos Imperial Mills/Dominion Textiles. He remained there following the closure of the plant in late 1991 for an additional period of time overseeing maintenance & security, pending the sale of the buildings. He grew up on the family farm on the Wyman Road and later in life, often reminisced about his childhood there. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with family and friends. He was also a member of the Yarmouth Lions Club and the Sou’westers Barbershop group and was very proud of being a lifelong blood donor. While living at the Meadows for the last 7 years, Hubert loved doing Sudoku’s, cryptoquotes, reading the newspaper, writing in his Journal about his day and watching the wildlife outside his window. He enjoyed entertaining and being entertained by Gilbert, the resident cat. He is survived by his children Susan (David) Deveau, Middle Sackville; Holly Cunningham, Wedgeport; Shelley (Geoff) Baker, Arcadia, and their mother Judith “Elaine” (Hamm) Cunningham, Arcadia; sisters, Gaylon (William “Billy”) Newell, Plymouth; Kathy Doucette, Hubbard’s Point; sister-in-law Brenda Cunningham, BC; grandchildren, Alex, Nicholas, Stephanie, Krystina, Matthew; and great grandchildren, Kylie, Lucas, Natan, Katalaya; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Hubert was predeceased by his brothers, Glenn and Dale and sister-in-law Joyce. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff at The Meadows for taking such good care of Dad, he loved being there. Cremation has taken place under the care of Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. A celebration of life will be held at Saturday February 1 from 1:30 until 3:30 in Sweeny's Funeral Home South Room . Donations in memory may be made to the Yarmouth Lions Club, Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made to sweenysfh@eastlink.ca or you may sign the guestbook online at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net
