Obituary for Herbert "Herb" Larry Thibedeau
Thibedeau, Herbert "Herb" Larry – age 72, of Yarmouth, passed away May 24, 2021, in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a 10-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare and debilitating neurological disease affecting only 5 people in 100,000.
Born in Yarmouth, he was son to the late Stephen and Helen (Trask) Thibedeau.
Herb’s younger years included family visits to Melbourne and Sanford. He loved to accompany his father to transport seafood to Maine via the MV Bluenose.
Herb was a proud Nova Scotian. He loved his hometown of Yarmouth where he was a retired schoolteacher from South Centennial School. A trivia buff, he always had a story to share about the province, his town, its history and its people.
Herb was well read and a collector of all things, including antiques and sports memorabilia, who never missed an auction or yard sale. He was also a creative guy who loved to take photos and draw.
He was a passionate fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Canadienes -“Go Habs Go!” Over the years, Herb also enjoyed playing many sports including golf, bowling, hockey, and softball. He liked all parlour games including cards, puzzles, and billiards.
Herb loved to laugh and had an awesome sense of humour, influenced by Monty Python, Saturday Night Live, SCTV, and much more. He considered rappie pie one of the 4 essential food groups, and always said every meal Deb cooked was the “best”.
Herb doted over his kids and grandchildren leaving them with many memories of a caring and fun-loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed travelling to Ottawa and Barbados to spend time with them and their extended families.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Deb (MacLeod); son Chris (Susan Savriga), Ottawa; daughter, Hannah (Trevor Alkins), Ottawa; grandchildren Stella Thibedeau and Jack Alkins; sister, Margaret Fearon, Yarmouth; brother, Gary (Karen), Truro, many nieces, nephews, and a great niece and nephew. Herb was predeceased by his parents and brother, Stephen.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Memorial donations may be made to Yarmouth Regional Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
