Obituary for Eleanor Bernice McSwain

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor Bernice McSwain at Hospice Halifax on May 21, 2021 at the age of 86. Born in South Ohio, Yarmouth County on September 15,1934, she was the daughter of Keith and Evelyn (Cann) Moses. She married Curtis, the love of her life, 65 years ago and together, they moved to Halifax, where she worked at Glubes, the Halifax Dockyard and Sears Canada. A wonderful mother to her three daughters, she was renowned for her baking and cooking skills. She made sure holidays were celebrated with lots of decorations and homemade treats and that childhood birthday parties were magical. Eleanor was a beautiful knitter and crafted many sweaters, mittens, and even barbie doll clothes. Only one of her daughters, however, was lucky enough to inherit her knitting skills. Eleanor enjoyed bowling and bingo with her best friend Sally, and the pair seemed to win more than their fair share at the bingo hall. She loved to play cribbage with her family and also enjoyed gardening, walking in Point Pleasant Park, collecting sea glass and eating chocolate. She is survived by her devoted husband, Curtis; daughters Heather Slemon (Mark), Linda McSwain-Berryman (Chuck), Gwen McSwain (Alex MacCulloch); grandchildren Meagan, Emma, Kelly, Mitchell, Gillian, Laura, Matthew and Kathryn; and great-granddaughters Olivia and Evelyn. Predeceased by her parents and brother Raymond, she is survived by her brother Samuel (Karen), sister Gertrude, adopted sister Kim (Ashton), sister-in-law Doreen and special niece Brenda. The family would like to thank the VON nurses who looked after her and the staff of Halifax Hospice for the care and support they provided. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Halifax or the ALS Society of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
