Obituary for Dorothy E. Goudey
With great sadness the family of Dorothy Eileen Goudey announces her death on February 9, 2020.
Caring wife for 58 years of John Francis (deceased), Dorothy is survived by her
children John Robert (Jennifer), James Stephen (Brenda Corbett), Martha Ann
Collard (Tim Collard); grandchildren Elise and Dylan Collard; sister Mary Elizabeth
Walker (Robert Bruce Walker); sister-in-law Elinor Whyte (Donaldson).
Born in Shawinigan, Quebec, Dorothy was the daughter of the late James Smith
Whyte and Margaret Eileen Whyte (Wadleigh) and one of four children, predeceased
by her brothers James Smith Whyte and Robert Andrew Christopher
Whyte and her sister-in-law, Karen Marie Whyte (Johnson).
After graduating high school in Shawinigan, Dorothy completed her nurse’s
training in 1949 at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She commenced a
cross country journey with her fellow nurses, working at various hospitals along
the way, including the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
Dorothy then left Canada to work at the Royal Homeopathic Hospital in London,
England, caring for the injured veterans from WWII. She remembered the very
long hours and the intensity of the work.
She married John in 1952 and began a new life of raising children and volunteer
work, despite moving every couple of years as John’s work took the family from
Quebec to Ontario to the USA and to Hong Kong in 1972. In 1990, John and
Dorothy retired to Yarmouth.
Dorothy had a lifelong commitment to helping others and giving back to her
community, regardless of where she lived. Through the American Women’s
Association, she transcribed textbooks into braille, guided sailors on leave in HK at
the Fleet Club, was active in Girl Guides and the PTA.
Upon retiring to Yarmouth, Dorothy became actively involved with the Women’s
Auxiliary at the Yarmouth County Hospital, volunteering on the Diabetic ward,
Holy Trinity Anglican Church in the Women’s Guild, sewing costumes for the
Yarmouth Arts Regional Council (Th’ YARC), Meals on Wheels, Milton
Improvement Society (Treasurer), Yarmouth SPCA fundraising, and reading to the
blind. In 2006, Rotary International recognized her volunteerism by presenting
her with the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
An avid gardener, competitive bridge player, golfer, curler, and lover of cats,
Dorothy brought her quick wit and caring manner to everyone and everything she
touched. She loved solving the daily crossword and word puzzles, long walks on
the beach, knitting socks for the Red Cross, and making currant jelly from the
bushes in her garden.
Dorothy will be greatly missed. The family is grateful to Dr. Julie Chandler and
Ms. Beverlee Jacquard for their support; and for the compassion and high-quality
care Dorothy received while residing at Sunset Terrace and the Meadows.
Cremation has occurred. The family will gather for a Celebration of Life Wednesday, August 17,2022 at 11 a.m.
