Obituary for Captain Derek Earl Thomas -

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Capt. Derek Earl Thomas, 59, of Port Maitland, on Friday February 16, 2024 at Orlando Health - Health Central Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Born in Wolfville, NS on April 11, 1964 he was the only child to Clinton Tinkham and the late Audrey Thomas.

Derek was proud to be a graduate of Acadia University where he passionately played hockey for the Acadia Axemen while on scholarship and ultimately earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology.

Through his immense determination and continuous hard work, Derek became well known and well respected within the geology industry.

Aside from his success as a geologist, Derek spent nearly 30 years as Captain at sea. Throughout his career in the fishing industry Derek mentored countless individuals and was always known for lending a helping hand to his fellow fishers. His dedication to ensuring a safe and sustainable fishery left a lasting impact on those around him and will continue to do so for generations to come.

A humble man, Derek found great joy in the simplicities of life. Often surrounded by family and friends, his humour and unwavering love warmed the hearts of those who held him close.

He enjoyed travelling to many parts of the world, always meeting new friends along the way. Amongst the long list of ones who will miss Derek, are his beloved pets, never far from his side.

With unparalleled selflessness and generosity Derek spent countless hours dedicated to volunteering for causes he believed in. Most notable his continued commitment to the betterment of his community of Port Maitland.

Derek is survived by his loving wife, Kim (Bain), father Clinton Tinkham, daughters Courtney Thomas, Brittany Thomas, (Radhika) Angie (Gopal) Yadav and Lacey (Yvon) d’Entremont, grandchildren, Durjay, Hemani, Vivi and Bodhi. Derek was excited to know he will be a Grampy again in July.

He was predeceased by his mother Audrey Thomas, maternal grandparents Walter and May Thomas, and paternal grandparents Russel and Ivy Tinkham.

There will be a Celebration of Life at the Port Maitland firehall on March 16, 2024 from 12-4. Interment to take place at a later date. Online condolences may be left at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net

Although Derek left us far too soon, the great pride he had for his role as president of the Harbour Authority of Port Maitland will be felt for years to come. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Harbour Authority of Port Maitland.

The family of Derek would like to extend a heartfelt thank you and express their forever gratefulness to the Orlando Health - Health Central Hospital for the kindness and compassion shown to Derek and his family during such a difficult time.
