Obituary for Betty Mae Surette

Our loving Mother, Betty Mae Surette of Yarmouth, N.S. passed away peacefully on January 26th,2023 in her home surrounded by her 3 children; Darren Welner (Karen Garrett), Shelley Welner Rose (Shannon Allen) and Derek Surette (Trina Deion). She has one grandchild, Shellisa Rose. Betty (Mom)was a daughter to the late Arden and Helen Frost. In her earlier years, mom was best known for being a cashier and bookkeeper at several grocery stores in downtown Yarmouth. Many people have told us that mom was always friendly and always had a smile on her face. She admirably stood on her feet countless hours to support us kids. Mom met her 2nd husband, Amos Surette, the love of her life in the middle 1970s. For several decades after being a cashier, she was happy to be a homemaker as well as a part-time bookkeeper for E&J Millworks (Castle Building Centres). When her mother, our grandmother (Nan) needed extra care Mom stepped in and looked after her so that she could remain living in her own home. Mom liked the simple things in life. In their golden years, her and Amos (dad) were happy to have friends over playing cards and board games. They liked going for drives or just being together watching TV. After Amos (dad) passed away 5 years ago, as well as the passing of many of her best and closest friends, Mom found it difficult to fill the void in her heart. She did find enjoyment in Facebook scrolling and messaging, attending Church, going to the Temple Seniors Club, chatting and going for drives with friends both old and new. Her smile, quick wit and great sense of humour will be missed by both friends and family alike. Special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and Healthcare workers that attended to mom in the past 3 weeks. As well to friends that kept in touch with her regularly; Sue, Millie, Clyde and Carol, Delbert, Sharon, Ivan, Heather, Joyce, and many others. The family will be receiving friends from 12:30p.m. leading up to the Memorial Service at 1:00p.m. February 5, 2023, from the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Keith Moore officiating. Reception to follow service in Jacob’s Loft. Interment in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Argyle Head. Flowers are accepted, and donations can be made to Friends of Gilles Boudreau Cancer Help Fund, SPCA or Tri-County VON.
