BONNAR, BERNARD JOSEPH, Hebron, Yarmouth Co., N.S.
“Bernie” passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on the 30th of January, 2021 at the age of 89. He was born in Tracy, N.B. on the 17th of January, 1932, the son of Ora Bertram Bonnar and Eleanor (Landers) Bonnar. Bernie was a retired telecommunications technician who moved to Hebron, N.S. in the 1970’s. He was an amateur radio operator, holding the call sign VE1UT for 70 years. He made contacts and friends all over the world, and promoted interest in amateur radio for most of his amateur radio career. He devoted countless hours to various community organizations, including the Yarmouth Amateur Radio Club, Ground Search and Rescue, Emergency Measures, (REMO), and Scotia Sportsmen’s Association.
He is survived by his wife, Veralyn (Rogers) Bonnar, son, Mitchell (Lynda) Bonnar, daughter, Bernadette Ryan (Dennis), grandchildren, Holly (Ralph) Dempsey, Carlynn Bonnar and Barrett Bonnar, and two great grandchildren, Landon and Liam Bonnar. He was predeceased by his former wife, Carol (Carlyn) Harpell Bonnar and her children, Christopher Colwell and Linda MacFarlane. Special thanks go to all Bernie’s excellent caregivers and staff of Yarmouth Regional Hospital. There will be a private family graveside service at a later date.
