Obituary for Ana Brodarec

Brodarec, Dr. Ana, 97, Dayton, passed away January 1,2019, in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a short illness. Born July 24,1921 in Sisak, Croatia she was a daughter to the late Petar and Dragica (Poznic) Zganec. She graduated in Pharmacy, then earning her PhD in Medicine from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, specializing in nutrition. As a young lady, 18 years of age she was imprisoned in solitary confinement in Lepoglava, Croatia by the Nazi Regime. Upon her release, she joined a group of 16 members of the first Partizan resistance. She served in the Partizan Army as a major from 1941-1945. She received several high military decorations including Spomenica 1941. During the War years, she married her companion and love of her life Dr. Ivo Brodarec Sr. After World War ll she worked in the Central Institute of Health Protection , Zagreb, Croatia in the field of nutrition for school children and hospitals. She wrote Nutrition and Caloric Tables, first of its kind in Yugoslavia. Ana did research with Dr. Ancel and Margaret Keys, Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene at the University of Minnesota, studying Ethology of Cardio Vascular Disease with respect to nutrition . She did this by comparing two different populations, Mediterranean and Continental. During her time studying with Dr. Ancel Keys, she spent time in Israel doing research on nutrition in a Kibbutz in Israel. She has lived in Canada for the past 20 years after retirement in Zagreb. She made her home in Yarmouth County, enjoying socializing with her family and friends. She enjoyed classical music as well as updating her academic interests in nutrition. While living in Yarmouth she met Joseph Maloney and Florann who became her close friends. She assisted him in identifying the site and way he was rescued after his bomber was shot down and crashed over Slovenia in World War ll. As a result, a book was written by Ray Zinck describing the entire event. Ana is survived by her two children, Dr. Ivo (Ivan) Brodarec and Dr. Dubravka Brozek; daughter in law Dr. Alida Brodarec and son in law Peter Brozek. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Dr. Ivo Brodarec Sr. and her sister Mira Zganec who was killed by the Nazi Regime in a Concentration Camp in Jasenovac 1944. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be Thursday, January 10,2019 from 7-9 pm. in the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Service to take place January 11,2019 at 3 pm. also in the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Father Henry Smoleenars officiating.
