Obituary for Addison "Wesley" Spinney

Spinney, Addison “Wesley” – age 97 of Yarmouth N.S. passed away peacefully on December 4,2020 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Pubnico Head, Yarmouth County on November 29, 1923, he was the only son of Clinton and "Leta" Spinney. Wes was a veteran of the Second World War, joining the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17. He served his country on HMCS "Kamloops" and HMCS "Qu- Appelle". Wes received the Liberation of France medal which he was very proud of. Upon his return to civilian life, he continued his military interests by serving 18 years with the 14th. Field Artillery and as an instructor for 33 years with the 110 Yarmouth Army cadets. Wes was employed with Cosmos Imperial Mills for many years, and worked for the Royal Store, Yarmouth. His last employment, prior to retirement was with the Vocational School, Pleasant Street, Yarmouth. Wes was a very active person, and he had many skills; it was not unusual for him to have several part-time jobs as well as his full-time job. He worked for Shell Service Centre for many years, as part time helper. He was one of the founding members of the Hibernia Street Housing Co-op. project and joined with others to build ..... houses under that development. His home with Marion at 52 Hibernia Street is a testament to his work skills and love of cooking, entertaining and gardening. Wes was a devoted "family" man with many close friends. He loved square dancing, ball room dancing, camping, fishing, and hunting. Wes was a former Lion's Club member, as well as Toastmaster International. He was a member of the Yarmouth Cursillo Movement and continued to be an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 155, Wedgeport. He served as a greeter and usher for the St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Sandra; daughter-in-law, Linda Spinney and her daughter Melanie; grandchildren, Erica Spinney and Connie (Martin) MacAdam; 2 great grandchildren, Desmond and Autumn. Wes was the last surviving member of his immediate family and besides his parents Wes was predeceased by his first wife, Marion (Hubbard); son, Terry; sisters, Verna Roberts, Sarah Goodwin; and Doris Hopkins. Cremation has taken place under the care of Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. A funeral mass will take place Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at 1 P.M. from St. Ambrose Co Cathedral with father Henry Smolenaars officiating. A legion service will take place at 1 hour prior at Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel. Donations in memory may be made to the Yarmouth Food Bank, or the Salvation Army (Yarmouth).
